Ever think someone is better than you? Ever think someone is worse than you? Taller, shorter, more attractive, fat, gorgeous, handsome, ugly? Stupid? Smart? How about richer, has more cool stuff, or more free time? Or think someone has all the luck… and you don’t? Do think someone made terrible choices, landing them in terrible places in their life? Or made all the right ones and now is on easy street?
Do you think people of another race are better or worse than you? Or those of a different religion, gender or gender preference are weird? Or those who are more conservative or less conservative have a problem? This is a tiny list and I bet you can think of a lot more things humans use to gauge themselves against others, including you. The thing is, none of us are the same as any of the rest of us. Even siblings with the same parents are not the same people with the same preferences.
When you consider all of our differences, it is a wonder any of us get along with anyone else, ever. But we do and I have a theory.
Each of us chooses which way to go. I know people who are blind to color, gender and philosophical differences. I gave birth to a passel of them.
Focusing on any differences drives wedges between you, and not only the other person, but all people.
I’ll let you think about that for a second. It’s pretty powerful.
When we focus on what makes us alike, we have things in common that we can agree on. It is our differences that make life interesting, but they do not need to drive us apart.
It is when you judge another that you separate yourself not only from another person, but from everyone else on the planet.
When you look at it that way, focusing on similarities sounds much better, huh?!
